The average minute audience of the finals was impressive.
Sam Bishop 1 Agustus 2018

As you may well know, the Overwatch League wrapped up this past weekend with London Spitfire taking home the trophy at Brooklyn's Barclays Center, and now we have official viewing figures for the event that show just how popular the finals between London Spitfire and Philadelphia Fusion were.

Including TV networks like ESPN as well as online streams, the estimated global average minute audience across both days was 861,205, with the US average being 289,175. Worldwide, the average minute audience between the ages of 18 and 24 was 605,013 too, so there were no shortage of fans.

"Overwatch League started as one of the most ambitious projects in esports history," said Twitch cofounder Kevin Lin. "We worked together with Blizzard on many new innovative experiences, including a Cheering rewards program, the All-Access Pass, exclusive Twitch chat emotes, a feature-packed interactive Extensions overlay, and more. Seeing our efforts draw an impressive and passionate audience on Twitch for the Grand Finals reflects a promising future for the league."

As Nielsen explains (and shared by Dot Esports), the average minute audience is "the average number of individuals or (homes or target group) viewing a TV channel, which is calculated per minute during a specified period of time over the program duration."
